Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yuan Xie | Biology and Life Sciences | Best Researcher Award
Associate professor | Fourth Military Medical University | China
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yuan Xie is a researcher affiliated with the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China, working in the interdisciplinary fields of structural biology, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), and protein biochemistry. His scholarly contributions focus on elucidating the three-dimensional structures and mechanisms of biologically important macromolecules, particularly those involved in photosynthesis and bacteriophage–host interactions. Although at an early stage of his academic career Xie has already demonstrated notable scientific impact, reflected in 29 citations, 1 peer-reviewed publication, and an h-index of 1, indicating strong early recognition within the structural biology community. His most prominent work Crystal structure analysis of extrinsic PsbP protein of photosystem II reveals a manganese-induced conformational change presents significant insights into the dynamic mechanisms underlying photosystem II function. Additionally complementary research on bacteriophage K64-ORF41 depolymerase conducted through high-resolution cryo-EM identifies key catalytic and substrate-binding residues critical for degrading the capsular polysaccharides of Klebsiella pneumoniae. This work holds translational value for developing phage-derived therapeutics targeting carbapenem-resistant bacterial strains—an area of growing global concern. Xie’s research displays strong collaborative engagement with co-authorship across eight academic partners working in microbiology molecular biophysics photosynthesis research and structural enzymology. Citations to his work appear across high-impact domains including membrane protein structure TRP channel gating mechanisms transporter biology and enzymatic regulation in the Calvin–Benson–Bassham cycle. This broad cross-disciplinary relevance indicates that his structural findings contribute foundational knowledge applicable to both health and environmental sciences.Through his rigorous structural characterization of proteins with both physiological and therapeutic importance Yuan Xie contributes to advancing mechanisms-based drug design next-generation antibacterial strategies and improved understanding of photosynthetic regulation. His work showcases the growing influence of early-career structural biologists in addressing critical scientific and societal challenges.
